Summary:
The Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP) seeks a highly qualified and experienced candidate to fill the position of Deputy Director of Research.
This is an opportunity to work with the director and program leadership to define strategies for new and existing research programs that position Alaska as an innovative ecosystem for energy research.

Administrative:
Serve as Acting Director for ACEP in the absence of the Director.
Provide Departmental Signature Authority in the absence of the Director.
Work with researchers and the ACEP Executive Officer to ensure staffing needs are met.
Develop metrics for tracking and reporting on program performance.
Review and/or perform SWOT (strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats) analysis of existing programs, as needed, and contribute to the development of strategic plans.
Advocacy and Program Development:
Identify and/or create new opportunities for ACEP researchers.
Effectively advocate for ACEP programs and funding and build strong partnerships both within the university and externally.
Position ACEP to be an essential partner with the state of Alaska, industry, and the federal government in developing innovative and practical energy solutions.
Work with the University of Alaska government relations team, UAF Vice Chancellor for Research and other partners to develop, maintain, and enhance support for ACEP's programs at the state and federal levels.
Promote ACEP research with private and public organizations and key constituencies.
Work closely with leadership in other units in the University of Alaska to identify opportunities for research collaboration.
Represent and advocate for ACEP at research-based governance meetings university-wide.
Supervisory:
Supervise Research professionals at the Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP), including both staff and faculty.
Manage hiring, delegating responsibility, work review, performance evaluation, and discipline.
Oversee professional activity, provide mentorship, and ensure each researcher has the tools they need to thrive and continue to grow in their professional capacity.
Within the guidelines of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) establish and maintain faculty-leadership interactions through annual evaluation of faculty, organizing or facilitating regular faculty meetings, and facilitating other means of conveying faculty input to the ACEP Director.
Facilitate any required revisions to the ACEP unit-criteria for the annual evaluation and promotion of Faculty.
Work with ACEP and peer faculty to ensure representation of the unit in the Faculty Senate.
Working with the ACEP Executive Officer, regularly review and update, as required, procedures for research faculty hires.
Serve as a core member of the ACEP Leadership Team.
Provide strategic input to the ACEP Director and ACEP Executive Officer.
Work closely with the ACEP Director, ACEP Executive Officer, ACEP research faculty, and ACEP research lab and facility researchers to create and maintain a professional, efficient, collaborative, and supportive workplace.
Work with the ACEP Director and Executive Office to develop staffing plans to maintain appropriate growth of personnel for the ACEP research programs.
Work closely with the ACEP Director to create and manage research teams to pursue projects in support of ACEP's mission.
Research:
This position will be responsible for developing and/or maintaining a successful research program.
The evaluation of success will be based on the unit criteria for Faculty Evaluation and Promotion adopted by the unit.
Facilitate the pursuit of large programmatic research grants including serving as a PI as needed.
Work with the Director, Executive Officer, and any pertinent program leads to develop and/or update strategic plans for new or existing research programs as needed.
Research and disseminate information about pertinent research opportunities to ACEP faculty and staff.

Required Experience & Education:
Ph.
D.
or equivalent experience in a relevant scientific field and a minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible management experience required including at least 5 years of experience in supervising and managing individuals and teams.
Salary Information:
This is a full-time, 12-month, Director (Academic-Faculty), exempt position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package.
New hires starting salary will be based on education and experience.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The successful finalist will be expected to report to duty at the UAF office on the first day of employment.
